Control Your Stress, Increase Your Happiness, and Boost Your Productivity!
My students need a healthy distraction that involves Legos, puzzle-challenges, beads for arts and crafts, stencils for creativity, and games to keep them motivated throughout the day!
This project expired on June 18, 2018.
Hooray! This project is fully funded
My school has been serving K-6 students, both military dependents and local residents, since 1956 as part of the Hawaii State Department of Education. My classroom integrates a remarkably diverse population that includes Filipinos, Caucasians, African-Americans, Samoans, and Asian-Americans.
I am an elementary school special education teacher, teaching students where small groups, close proximity, and acceptance is very important.
My students range in abilities and grade-levels, which makes my classroom a fun and unique environment to be a part of.
This project is really exciting because students who come to my classroom have requested each item shown. They are willing to work with a great attitudes knowing their individualized education program has built-in break times, allowing them to set a timer and relax. It has been proven that students flourish when given choices. This will provide an avenue of choices they can work for that are specific to individual needs!
Studies have shown that "Downtime is an opportunity for the brain to make sense of what it has recently learned (Rest Is Not Idleness by Mary Helen Immordino-Yang, Joanna A Christodoulou, Vanessa Singh)."
Student success depends on what I know and what I can provide for them. Legos are an amazing tool that can give children the ability to challenge themselves and be builders. They explore with heir own imaginations or with peers.
The crafts I’m requesting aren’t just for girls, boys are interested too. They use fine motor skills, make something unique for either themselves or someone they care about, and learn turn-taking skills. The puzzles are such a great way to promote problem-solving and correspondence strategies. We not only have timed challenges but students are given the opportunity to work with each other on something they can start and finish together and feel proud of.
Students aren't just taking a break because they deserve it, but because they NEED it! These "tools" I am requesting are what are (in my opinion) essential to finding a balance in the daily lives of how students process the many things they are learning throughout the day.
