Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach sixth grade math at an amazing middle school in the Bronx. The kids I work with have relatively limited opportunities outside of the classroom for personal or intellectual enrichment. During the summer, a select few of my students are able to travel to the Dominican Republic or Puerto Rico to visit relatives, but many of them have little opportunity to explore the world outside of their community. Consequently, the majority of my students have not left the tri-state area and their global perspectives are limited. This summer, I want to give at least some of my students the opportunity to explore new landscapes, meet people from around the world and be exposed to new experiences, by attending a residential summer camp in Springfield, New Hampshire called Camp Pathfinder.
It has a coed program for 10-15 year olds and maintains a commitment to building a diverse community. One of the tenets upon which Camp Pathfinder operates, and that informs its commitment to diversity, is that “Camp is for everybody.” I believe in their mission to make camp available to a larger portion of the population and bring together campers and staff from a variety of socioeconomic backgrounds as well as around the world. That is why I am volunteering at Camp Pathfinder this summer and it is my hope to find generous people to sponsor several of my students for four weeks of camp. The camp itself is waiving as much as 82% of tuition and is willing to bring these kids to camp for less than cost. Not only will they learn about our natural environment first hand, but the trips-based camping experience helps build their self-esteem as well as their team and leadership skills. Camp Pathfinder is an environment that stimulates kids' minds. They stay mentally active, involved and focused while having valuable life experiences that they may never be exposed to otherwise. When else might a kid from the Bronx be able to see a bear in the wild, go hiking in the White Mountains or learn to build a shelter in the woods.
In order to make this incredible opportunity a reality for several of my students, I would like to raise funds which will cover the camp fees for four students to stay at camp for four weeks. If you are able to sponsor one student for half or all of the time, I would be extremely grateful. The student you sponsor will be in touch with you before and throughout the summer.
