My students need continuing improvement to the piano lab, as older instruments are starting to wear out. As students become more advanced, we are in need of another full-size keyboard.
We are a public elementary school located in Jersey City, NJ, serving children in Kindergarten through the 5th Grade. While we are located in the downtown area, our students come from all over the city.
Our student population is diverse in the truest sense of the word: A few months ago, I made a list by asking my students where they or their families were from, and promptly received these answers: Japan, Senegal, Germany, Pakistan, India, France, Korea, Philippines, Ireland, Benin, Dominican Republic, China, Puerto Rico, Ireland, Ecuador, Russia, and Thailand.
My Project
The piano lab at Public School 16 has become more robust as the years have progressed. When it started in 2007, we had 5 Casio 51-key keyboards, all of which were donations to the school. Now, as the quality of students in our piano program continues to improve, older instruments are starting to wear out, as well as the students are growing out of the instruments that are not full-size. This project seeks to augment the instruments that we have. In addition to a new 88-key keyboard, currently, our students sit in classroom chairs to practice. As the music teacher, I have long wanted to replace these with piano stools, which would be more appropriate.
