My Students

My students come from a variety of backgrounds but have one thing in common--they are motivated to learn and to succeed in my classroom and beyond. Through our study of literature, they become inquisitive readers who are able to explore the human condition through fiction. Through diligent practice and experimentation, they strive to grow as writers and thinkers.

Together, we are partners in learning as we are guided to understand each other and the world around us through the works of great writers--poets, novelists, and dramatists.

The lessons we explore together are useful to them as they move to the next phase of their lives: college or career.

My Project

My students become well-acquainted with the "old masters and mistresses" of poetry but it's time to bring new, contemporary, modern voices to their attention.

Through careful reading and engaging discussion, we will delve into what it means to be living through some of today's most difficult circumstances.

Two contemporary voices are Clint Smith and Jose Alvarez, writers who are changing the landscape of the power of poetry. This is the start of building classroom sets of poetry collections that address, through current perspectives, some of the many issues and struggles going on in the world today. These collections are recommended by the National Council of Teachers of English.
