I work with an inspiring group of young adults ages 14 to 19 who have recently immigrated to the United States. My students are very dedicated and focused on getting an education, and most are working full-time to afford to live here while attempting to complete high school. All my students attend a special school within a school to accelerate their learning and move them towards graduation.
Every one of my students is dedicated to learning and working towards graduating and creating a productive future for themselves and their families.
"A true sign of intelligence is not knowledge but imagination" ~ Albert Einstein. As an out-of-the-box teacher, I am continually looking for ways to spark that love of learning in my students. I re-imagine ways to teach skills that have been traditionally taught through books. I can teach a student to read, but I can't force a student to critically look at what they are reading, that comes from their own thinking. I have found that in something as simple as creating a 3D project or a mechanical project students begin to learn how they think.
Everyone is different and begin able to create brings with it critical thinking that would take me years to teach.
This project would help me give my students more tools to use in their creative endeavors. Our center only has regular tape and glue right now, double sided tape would increase their ability to design projects. Having fine point felt markers as opposed to the thicker less precise Crayola markers, would allow my students to create much crisper projects. In addition, many of my students have not had the opportunity to draw, color or create artistically due to life circumstances. These projects help develop fine motor skills that are useful when writing. Please considered helping me stock and grow my Maker Space the results are endless.
