My students are juniors and seniors from six different school districts that attend my class for two and a half hours a day. They love hands-on projects and would rather be working hard on building something than sitting in a classroom. A large percentage of students will continue their career path into the trades by attending university, trades school, apprenticeship programs or immediate employment after graduation.
Each year the students have participated in a building project that has partnered with a community member.
In 2015, the students rebuilt a house for a local family that lost their home to a fire. In 2016, the students built a pavilion for the Rails to Trails path near our school and re-roofed the Masonic Hall in Stanton. In 2017, the students built a 1200 square foot home on school property that will be auctioned and shipped to a community member. We are currently working on a 40' suspension bridge on the nature trails near our school.
My Project
Each year the Montcalm Area Career Center invites 250 second grade students to the Construction Trades Lab to assemble bird feeders that they take home and give to a loved one for Christmas. This project has been successful for the last four years. Through your donation, 250 second graders can have, as one former 2nd grade student expressed, “the best day of their life".
We have 120 Career and Technical students from Construction, Engineering, Health and Agriscience teaming up to make this a memorable experience for the second grade students.
It emphasizes teamwork, leadership, and community involvement in an area where the majority of students come from low income families and may not otherwise be able to have these experiences.
It takes 6' of 1x6 pine, 1 -mason jar, 1- hinge, screws, nails and birdseed to build one bird feeder. It is wrapped in bubble wrap and put in a decorated bag for travel. The bird feeder is assembled by the 2nd graders going to several stations were a MACC Construction student will give them one on one attention and help them use electric drills and hammers. They fill the birdseed bag with an interactive experiment built by the Engineering students. They get to put their own creative touches by decorating the gift bag and making a gift card for their loved one with the help of Agriscience and Health students.
We live in a rural area with a high percentage of low income families, and we think it’s important for our students to understand that they do possess the resources to improve their community.
