I feel lucky to teach math to an amazing group of 6th and 7th grade children. These children have an amazing curiosity and thirst for knowledge when it comes to mathematics!
I am especially impressed with how they are able to use their preferred talents to describe and solve mathematics; including writing, sketching, and storytelling.
Even though many of these children come from difficult circumstances, they have not lost their enthusiasm and wonder. They come to school ready to be challenged and engaged in meaningful math activities.
My Project
Recently my district adopted a new mathematics curriculum, Connected Mathematics, which is problem centered and inquiry based. The Professional Development was amazing and we are ready to go and excited for the beginning of the school year!
Our classroom will need new materials for our children to use as they delve deeply into mathematics by solving real world problems.
Calculators will allow the search for solutions in many ways. We will need chart paper, markers, and colored pencils to document our conjectures and evidence, as well as give us the opportunity to share our ideas and learn from each other.
