Why are constructions important in Geometry?
Learning how to use the tools is useful. Some of the techniques are useful in construction of buildings, furniture, and so on. Constructions are closely related to the thinking skills that are students are in great need of learning.
I teach Geometry and Algebra in small rural school in Missouri.
A large percent of our students live at or below the poverty line. My Algebra and Geometry students EOC scores last year exceeded students' score from much larger and more prosperous districts. I have a great bunch of kids and try to provide them with the resources they need to continue to make great strides towards their education.
My Project
Trying to learn geometry without using geometric construction is like trying to learn chemistry or biology without using laboratories. Basic knowledge and skills of geometric constructions help students to discover and explore geometric relationships and interpret geometric concepts and theorems. They can also help the teacher to transform the static and confusing array of definitions and theorems typically found in geometry textbooks into an active and exploratory investigation of geometric relationships.
My students need protractors, compasses, and rulers so the can learn to create accurate constructions. This is also standard for the Common Core Assessment. I also need a teacher set so that students can watch as I model how to create a construction.
As any mathematics teacher knows, and as most students soon come to realize, geometric figures are nearly always helpful for the analysis and solution of real world problems and for learning new mathematical ideas.
Although the geometric constructions are necessary for such graphical descriptions of problems or ideas, their precision can often reveal aspects of the problem or idea that may not be evident in an informal paper or blackboard sketch. The extra time spent in producing excellent graph
