My students need to develop their critical thinking skills which will be accomplished through working with the Magna-Tiles, Sensational Sorting Set, and floor puzzles.
Kindergarten students are facing ever increasing academic demands as Common Core Standards are being adopted. In order successfully meet these demands, students need to have a highly developed ability to think critically.
These Kindergarten students are so enthusiastic about learning, they are having their first experience with school and learning and are soaking up every minute experience that I am able to give to them.
Our school is one of moderate poverty, with some students coming to school with a variety of critical thinking experiences while others have not had the opportunity to develop their critical thinking skills. I believe that these children should have multiple experiences in a day to help them problem solve and develop these important skills. I hope to have them have numerous experiences through work at centers, both individually and collaboratively to develop better critical thinking. My kids thoroughly enjoy working together, discussing the problem and accomplishing the task set before them.
My Project
Magna-tiles, Sorting Sets and Floor Puzzles, are excellent resources to allow the students to work together and accomplish a task. The floor puzzles and Sorting sets have a definite goal/task for the students to accomplish with a specific end in mind. This will automatically give each student positive reinforcement and build their confidence in their critical thinking skills. The Magna-tiles are the most amazing items to build with that will allow the students to create their own goals, not hindered by wooden blocks falling over. These tiles with magnets can be used for a child to creatively explore building amazing structures, but these items will also be of great use when we are studying three dimensional shapes, allowing the students to identify them and build each shape we are learning about.
Kindergarten is the place where all formal education begins!
I would love to have as many resources as possible to give these kids as many different experiences as possible. I hope to use these resources to encourage collaboration, problem solving and critical thinking in a variety of situations. Who knows? Maybe a child will grow up to be an architect because they were intrigued with building with Magna-tiles in their Kindergarten classroom - wouldn't that be amazing!
