My Students

My students are one of the most dynamic and fun groups to teach--kindergarteners! Each day in kindergarten is fresh and full of possibility and discovery. Kindergartners' interests are broad and varied, and their collective knowing is remarkable. In kindergarten, we laugh and cry together as we learn about ourselves and the world around us.

We are a part of a rural, public, TK-8, one-school school district.

We have two classes for each grade level (except for TK which only has one). While our parent base is extremely supportive, our local economy has suffered in recent years. Our school community has worked hard to maintain its commitment to preserve art, music, drama, athletics, library, technology, and foreign language. Our fundraising efforts, for the most part, supplement salaries for special program teachers and sports coaches, and capstone events such as school plays, environmental field trips, and leadership development opportunities.

My Project

The materials I am requesting are diverse and appear somewhat unrelated, but they are all ingredients that will help me optimize my instruction and my students' learning experience as they conceptualize and construct meaning, create, and collaborate together in our classroom. Who am I? Who do I want to be? How can we share? How do we express ourselves? How does the world work? These touchstone questions guide the work of my students.

The selected books promote a healthy understanding and acceptance of self and others.

Some of the books are in the social-emotional genre, others are stories about famous artists, and a few of the books are simply on topics fascinating to kindergarteners. We have class meetings each week, and often use stories to personalize and inspire our conversations. These readings are followed up with activities and games. Additionally, I try to highlight an famous artist each month, and the selected books compliment our investigations into the artists' personal stories and artwork.

The selected games and construction activities promote collaboration, creativity, conceptual understandings, and critical thinking skills across the curriculum (particularly STEAM), while the globe and map book will enrich our geography studies.

Some of the materials are tools--an EZ-tuner for our lap harp, a tried and true stapler that can be used effectively by kindergarteners, and a pencil sharpener that will accomodate our large pencils AND our colored pencils. The headsets will be used with our iPads for our RazzKids reading program.

These materials will help make a difference in my students' learning about themselves and the world. Thank you for your consideration.
