If you have it to build, they will come! Well, we don't have it. Let me rephrase, we have a hodgepodge of various types blocks as you see in our picture, but it definitely is not enough to start a Lego Club.
We are a K-5 neighborhood school with a high free and reduced lunch population.
We have started Dragon Clubs to give students a wide range of opportunities to participate in every other Friday afternoon. I would like to start a Lego Club when we change our clubs. This club would enable any K-5 student, regardless of communication, mobility, or learning issues to fully participate in the Lego Club.
My Project
The three sets of Legos will be enough to support a group of 24 K-5 students. It will give them an opportunity to work with one another to build new things utilizing the wheels and baseplates. Students can use their knowledge of communities and build their own Lego neighborhood I started to say "world" but we may need more than three sets of Legos:). Students will learn share, to work together, share ideas, to handle differences of ideas, and to compromise to reach a solution. These are life skills they will need their entire lives.
One of our ECE students built Rudolph pulling Santa in his sled with cubes from a math kit.
Just think . . . just THINK what he could have done with real Legos? With the Lego supplies I am requesting, the building possibilities are endless with him and others who choose the Lego Club. As creations are built, friendships will be built, a sense of community will be achieved, and the lasting sense of accomplishment and pride as they create what is in their imagination will be invaluable.
