Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As citizens, we know that it is our duty to be aware and informed about the way our government works, and how our Constitution applies to us. This is a process that many adults find daunting, yet my fourth and fifth graders are strive to develop such an awareness.
My students have qualified for participation in the gifted and talented program, yet reside in an extremely poor community.
Many are first generation Americans with minimum-wage earning parents who have very limited English and academic skills. My goal for my students is for them to realize their potential as successful leaders and community citizens of the future. As part of this process, they need to develop an understanding of their rights and responsibilities as citizens under the Constitution.
My Project
Understanding the history of our nation and how our Constitution applies to us today is an ongoing examination of the struggle between the common good and individual rights. My students engage in this struggle throughout the school year. Current events are a critical component of this process, because they allow us to apply the articles of the Constitution to things we can observe in our world today. Unfortunately, many of my students do not have access to appropriate print media at home to help in this process. Putting Time For Kids and Weekly Reader into their hands will enrich their perspectives and add to their knowledge base about our world. The reference books will assist us in using this knowledge to prepare for our annal mock Congressional Hearing at the end of the year. We started our year off with a bang, inviting our local mayor to come and talk with us about politics. If we can keep this momentum going, there's no end to the learning that will happen.
Your donation can be the deciding factor that will enable these deserving students to excel.
They are enthusiastic, and are honored at the very thought of someone caring about them enough to support them through this project. Please help them continue their momentum!
