My Students
Our students come from a variety of socio-economic backgrounds, with 79% qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch. In addition, our students are very transient, often moving several times during the school year and changing schools each time they move.
Despite Hurricane Michael, we were able to show growth in our school grade for the '18-'19 school year. We have a new English Language Arts curriculum for this coming year and I want to incorporate many of the texts used in the classroom in the therapy setting to facilitate carryover.
My Project
Providing text-rich experiences in the speech and language therapy setting assists students with transfer of skills. By using their English Language Arts texts in the therapy setting, I can improve their understanding of the text which will then transfer to the classroom setting and beyond.
Research indicates that using literary and informational texts in therapy helps students enhance their reading and comprehension skills. Having immediate access to their curricular texts will make it easier for me to incorporate them into daily use.
Using texts that are familiar to them will make school transitions easier and less stressful for those that move frequently.
