Help us stamp out bullying with "Bullying in Schools" from AKJ books and conquer the Common Core with challenging texts!
My students are smart, brave, funny, and full of potential.
They attend 6th grade in a high poverty k-8 school in urban northwest Ohio. Our school is 98% economically disadvantaged. Most of my students are Hispanic with English as their second language. Their parents tend not to speak English at all. Therefore, my students lack reading materials written in English at home, thus making it a challenge to master comprehension and fluency. These challenges carry over into science, math, and social studies.
My Project
My students will learn about bullying with the book, "Bullying in Schools" from AKJ books. It contains compelling true stories that my students will find relatable. My students will be able to discuss these stories & share their feelings about bullying in the safe environment of someone else's experience. These books will also help my students because they contain information about cyberbullying. Also requested are class sets of "Sorry Wrong Number and The Hitch-Hiker" by Lucille Fletcher & "Black Ships before Troy" by Rosemary Sutcliff. These books are Common Core Exemplars & have been deemed challenging enough to be recommended reading under the new college ready standards. When my students conquer these texts they will gain valuable self-esteem. This new found self-esteem will lead to less bullying as students will have buckets filled with esteem & won't need to "dip" into anyone else's bucket.
This project is so important because it will provide my students with the materials to conquer bullying and the common core!
This project is so important to my students because bullying in schools is something that hinders academic success. My students are working to overcome many hurdles already, including high poverty and English as second language. This project will have a broad impact as it will help us get over another major hurdle: bullying!
