Connections to Each Other Mean Connections in the Brain!
My students need the ability to access the internet in class. Being in a health class, we have limited computer access, because Chromebooks are reserved for general education classrooms! Help us work together!
I teach teenagers in a diverse community. All students are between 6-8 grade. We have a lot of diversity in as many ways as you can think of! Overall, students are active in the school and in the community. Students are constantly looking for ways to get involved and change our city. So, we have been using our health curriculum and trying to apply it in practical ways that can impact our environment, culture, and futures!
I have enthusiastic learners, with innovative and exciting ideas, that are limited by the lack of funding in the state!
I have given them multiple different learning tasks, and they have risen to the challenges. They have researched ways to incorporate physical activity into daily life, designed a town with everything needed to be healthy, and even started campaigning for a smoothie bar in the cafeteria. We use the internet for research, contacting experts, and creating documents and advertisements to share with others.
Students are always ready to try new things and see new ideas! They just need the technology to do so! When we take away the technology from the classrooms, or limit where the technology can be used, we greatly disadvantage everyone.
My Project
In our class, we have been building towns, making smoothies, designing advertisements, and analyzing health around the world! Students work in collaborative groups and use any device, like phones, I-Pads, Chromebooks, and even my personal laptop! They can stay engaged in class. However... some of our students do not have personal devices they can use!
I had been hiding an iPad cart in my classroom, cleverly disguised as a storage shelf, so that students had devices to use, but they were discovered and reclaimed!
What a shame! Imagine preparing for class and getting your devices ready only to have someone come in first thing and reclaim them. I can say... we all mourned the loss of our cart a little.
So now, here we are trying to make a case for only classrooms, 2 health classes, without readily available technology. We know that technology is the future, and it is the way students learn. However, when we limit the technology they have access to, we are devaluing the education process itself.
