Our school has a uniquely blended population of Gifted and Talented(K-8), Deaf and Hard of Hearing(PK-8) and Multiply Impaired students, also known as Preparing Students for Independence(3-22yrs). We are a community of learners like none I have ever experienced and probably never will again. Our school community boasts to represent over half the countries in the world and we do all we can to embrace and learn from each other.
Our students struggle with perfectionism, imposter syndrome and anxieties and are not all gifted in the same way.
My students have strong emotions and experiences and, like all children, benefit from learning strategies for self-regulation, empathy, and self acceptance. They want to be like everyone else (and are!) but know they are also different, and each in a multitude of ways.
My Project
My training will help me in my work as a social-emotional learning resource and advocate in my school and community. Research indicates student self-regulation, compassion and academic performance all improve with the use of social-emotional programs and yoga/mindfulness in schools.
Self-regulation and emotional intelligence need to be embedded in the learning process as a life skill.
The important work for schools to be trauma informed, safe spaces decreases incidences of bullying and improves student well-being. When a school community feels connected they are better equipped to inspire and support one another to learn and be change makers in their communities and their own lives.
