My students need a Scholastic Thesaurus pocket book to better apply synonyms and antonyms and an Apple iPad to connect to the world for additional critical thinking.
The needle is stuck! My students write the same words over and over in their papers. If they each had access to a thesaurus their writing wouldn't seem like a broken record! Vocabulary is the foundation to creative thinking. The iPad would also enhance avenues of technological thinking.
My students are the happiest group of children I have yet to teach!
I have a group of 24 boys and girls, between the ages to 7-9. Some of the children come from families without access to writing resources or technological devices when completing their assignments. In the classroom they collaborate with each other, compliment, ask high level questions, listen to one another, respond to one another, and help create an atmosphere of learning and respect. They have a thirst for knowledge. With all of this individual energy built up inside of them, a day does not go by without excitement transmitting from one student to another. Their electricity is contagious. Each student is his own star shining in our classroom of education at our public school.
My Project
My students will express themselves more accurately and be able to improve their speech and writing. They will be able to communicate more effectively; will improve their self-confidence and self-esteem; add sophistication to their speech; and will help improve people's impression of them. The technology will also enhance the students' cultural diversity and awareness of the world. Expanding their vocabulary also will have a positive effect on their behavior, as their frustration level will decrease with access to more words to express themselves. Having an extended vocabulary will expose them to new insights and lines of reasoning. It is also critical to reading development and comprehension. Studies show that a person's vocabulary level is the best single predictor of occupational success.
The positive impact this project will have on my students is infinite.
Knowledge never stops. By funding this project, they will have the tools to better themselves in vocabulary and enhance their critical thinking so that they will be more secure with their reading, writing, comprehension, and most importantly themselves.
