Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The 5th grade students in my school are eager learners who enjoy lessons that shape who they are as young people. They are passionate about school and crave to learn more each day. They like to learn new things that can impact their daily lives. As the Library Media Specialist, I work with the classroom teachers to extend their learning from the classroom into my library lessons. I am curating them to be lifelong readers and library users.

My Project

The 5th graders in my building are doing a read aloud of "Front Desk" by Kelly Yang with their teacher. "Front Desk" is currently buzzing in the library world because of the themes presented in the story. I believe in providing a library media program that represents all voices, not just one and "Front Desk" fits that to a "T". In having a conversation with the author, Kelly Yang, after reading the book, the students will get a deeper understanding (at their grade level) of the complexities presented in this novel. I really hope that we can connect our kids to Kelly because most of our students will be able to relate to this story.
