Recently, the city our school is located in was nominated as one of the top five cities you don't want to live in. This puts our students at a disadvantage right out the door. Our population varies, but we are considered to be a low-income, high poverty school district with over 76% of the student population receiving free or reduced-price lunch. Despite the many challenges our students face out of school, they are excited to come to school and be active learners.
It's our job to make sure students have the tools to be inspired to not only learn but to build a better future for their communities.
These kids are courageous and willing to work hard to change the minds of others.
My Project
When it comes to technology in the classroom some teachers/parents fear the unknown especially in the era where kids spend a lot of time on devices outside of school. It's proven that devices such as Chromebooks keep students engaged allowing them to interact with students in and out of the classroom.
Connecting with Chromebooks in classrooms creates an interaction between students and course material that accommodate different learning styles in ways that traditional curriculum cannot.
Google classroom allows for students to complete assignments on their own while the teacher is able to give immediate feedback or pull small groups. While there are also so many programs that lend themselves to allowing students to excel at their own pace.
As we move forward this year our goal is to have 1:1 Chromebooks within our classroom allowing students to close the achievement gap and be career ready. It's important that if we don't have the resources to real-life events outside of school that we can reenact those events inside of school through the use of technology.
