I work at Miami-Dade County's best-kept secret. Our county has implemented the use of technology into all reading classrooms at the high school level. As an intensive reading teacher, I want to expose my students to fun, engaging activities throughout the day.
My students are energetic, enthusiastic learners who strive to learn new ways to enrich their knowledge and prepare themselves for educational opportunities after high school.
Teaching during COVID-19 is uncertain. One day you're in school and the next day you could be put on quarantine. When my students and I are put on quarantine, I must pivot my lessons virtually. Some of my students were able to check-out a computer from the school or use a device they already had on their own. However, so many of their computers do not work properly and have a lot of technical issues. My students need to use their computers daily to join their classes through Zoom, do their classwork and homework, access their e-textbooks, and get their assignments.
Teaching during the pandemic, I need to have a computer that will be powerful enough to do various activities on the computer during and outside of my live class sessions.
With the computer that I am using now, I find it to be a challenge when I am presenting to my students and moving from program to program while I am teaching during my live class sessions. I've had my computer shut off and freeze during my live virtual sessions. When this occurs, the students are disconnected from my session and are just as frustrated as I am. This project will benefit my students by allowing me to have smooth and clear instruction during the live class sessions. Additionally, I will be able to model close-reading and annotating strategies for my struggling learners and students on quarantine through dual-modality. Lastly, it will also aid me when creating instructional videos, researching digital tools and resources, and communicating with both students and parents.
