My Students

Who doesn't want to engage in activities, discussion, projects, movies and presentations about life and learning about human nature in connection to the world around us? My English and Creative Writing classes focus on using great works to understand our fellow man. We need to sympathize and empathize more than ever to maneuver our world today and meet our ultimate goal of happiness. My students, who are typically aged 14 to 18, come from a very rural area, with the closest large city being over 2 hours away. Their exposure to other cultures is limited and many have never left the state. They struggle with childhood adversity in varying degrees, yet they come to school to learn and better themselves. I use poetry, dramas, novels, short stories and nonfiction pieces to give them the opportunity to make their voices heard with an emphasis on acceptance of others.

My Project

Providing my English II and Creative Writing students with Chromebooks would allow them greater opportunity for self expression and creativity in response to our readings. With Chromebooks, I would be able to expand upon our learning with more individualized reflections through slide shows, presentations, movie making, and technology based projects. Students could create blogs, research modern poetry, delve into STEM connections, and communicate with others outside their day to day world. They would be provided with the opportunity to connect and learn about others and how we can become more unified through understanding and acceptance. English is the study of life through literature, and all students have a voice needing to be heard and ears to listen to others in return.
