My children come to the classroom at many different learning levels. It would be wonderful to fill my classroom with many materials that would allow them choice and skill sets that are at their challenge level to prepare them for college and their futures.
My students are inner-city kids with great hearts and a love for learning.
Many times they do not have access to the materials that can take them where they need to be to prepare for their future. The materials we have are old/boring and don't allow for a deeper understanding of concepts. The entire school is on free and reduced lunch, they come to us often hungry. We have a breakfast program as well as a lunch program. We also have a grant for fruits and veggies. They love coming to school. We cannot fail to take them into the next century. Please help us.

My Project
We will have small groups based on summative and formative assessment. These groups will be based on interest as well as need. The centers will allow for independent grouping, flexible grouping as well as teacher directed time. The materials that I chose focus primarily on non-fiction and higher level reading. I have chosen from Lake-Lakeshoreshore "High Interest Nonfiction Text Sets", I also have ordered "High Interest Non Fiction Intervention Sets", I also ordered "Close Reading Activities" Non-fiction seems to be the most difficult for our students as well as necessary for them to move on in the new common-core standards. The materials will provide more interesting non-fiction for them to read. They will learn how to use the materials to compare text and obtain knowledge. I purchased materials for setting up centers that are color coded so that transitions will go smoothly. I will set up centers for them to work at daily during our intervention period. Centers will support their learning.
These materials will assist my classroom students in increasing their ability to compete with students from higher-income homes.
It will give them interesting material to learn from at a higher level and build their confidence as well as their test scores. They will be enriched by the more current materials and their ability to work together in small groups collaboratively.
