Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Like so many others during this coronavirus pandemic, our school building is completely closed. We are providing online learning lessons. Unfortunately, the majority of our students are not participating.
The realities of poverty often mean that online education is not the highest priority for our families.
When we dismissed for Spring Break on 3/6 we had no idea it was going to be the last time we saw each other. Students and teachers left lunch boxes, jackets, and of course, supplies in our classrooms.
The community that we serve in is constantly challenged. We are a Title 1 school serving a high poverty population. This pandemic has put most of the students' families at risk for eviction and/or food shortage. They are hard-working people who face increasing struggles due to COVID-19. Many parents were considered essential employees and that leaves our kids on their own for learning during the day.
My Project
Our students left school for Spring Break on 3/6 and will be out of the classroom over 5 months by the time school resumes in the fall. Many have tried to access our online learning but most rely on paper packets that we prepare each week. We are worried about students' basic needs, safety, as well as their learning. We have been doing our best to provide for our scholars as best as we can, and they have stepped into this new normal with flexibility and enthusiasm. Unfortunately, many times they want to complete their work but lack the needed materials to do so.
We see a summer slump in a normal school year and this has been far from normal.
We are hoping to make learning fun and easy with these materials. For Winter Break we sent the kids home with dice and instructions for math games they could play at home. Now we want to send home playing cards to give them additional family fun ideas that will help build their math fluency. The math and writing journals will encourage them to work a little each day to help prevent the summer slump!
