“There are many things we don’t understand, and many ways to unlock the brain and maximize function. Don’t ever let anybody tell you it can’t be done.”
― Sally Fryer Dietz, When Kids Fly: Solutions for Children with Sensory Integration Challenges
This is a severely handicapped special day class for students with autism and intellectual disabilities.
The class serves students that are transitional kindergarten age through the second grade. The school is a kindergarten through 8th grade campus in a middle class, diverse neighborhood. However, the special day class represents the entire community so includes a more diverse population overall. Students in the class have many varying abilities and needs. Many require significant modifications to materials to access the curriculum.
My Project
Students in the special day class will use the materials as supplemental tools to work on Individual Education Goals that are aligned with the Common Core. Several of the items such as the counting links and following directions building set will not only help students develop the academic skill, but also fine motor skills. Turn taking skills will be addressed simultaneously as reading with the go fishing for site words game.
Students with autism and intellectual delay may have a harder time learning, but they still can and want to learn.
Your donation will provide necessary supplemental materials to give students the opportunities to engage in academic activities and to grow as individuals.
