My students come to music class excited and ready to learn! I teach elementary music at a Title I school where over 80% of the students are socio-economically disadvantaged. This is my first year at my school and my mission is to develop a vibrant music program where students have the materials they need to succeed!
Music connects people!
Over 60% of my students come from a Latino or Hispanic background, and over 50% are English learners. One of our school priorities is to increase our efforts to build connections between our students' school and home communities. I value the cultural background of my students and want to include more songs, dances, and games from Latino and Hispanic cultures in my classroom.
My Project
Singing and dancing are important parts of cultures all over the globe for many reasons. Experiencing music, movement, and expressive language helps our students become more engaged, focused, and curious. The social-emotional benefits of these activities include making new friendships, practicing cooperation, making stronger bonds with peers through shared experiences, and providing opportunities for peer interaction and communication without the pressure of being tested and graded. Students feel more connected to classmates when they play games, dance, and sing together. I want my students to feel the sense of pride and belonging when they see their culture is valued by their teachers and classmates!
When singing and dancing, every student's contribution is important and valued by the group.
Hidden within the fun and games are significant opportunities to grow academically as well. Songs and dances help students follow sequential instructions, recognize patterns of repetition and contrast, and strengthen language processing skills. These skills help students throughout their school day, making happier and more successful students!
The resources I am requesting will help me build a repertoire of music and dance to share with my students as we connect with each other and the rich cultural background they know from home.
