Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My wonderful special ed students are hardworking and resilient. They have had to overcome a number of challenges many of us could not imagine and yet, they come to school each day with a love of learning and a desire to do their best. Many of my students are English Learners and are working hard to become proficient in English as well.
My students need help accessing learning materials in a way that is meaningful to them, that they can relate to their own life experiences and at a grade-level appropriate to where they are academically, rather than simply based on their age.
My Project
The class set of Esperanza Rising novels, teaching guides and audio tapes will allow my students to meet grade-level standards with lexile-appropriate reading materials they can access, analyze and enjoy. Students will practice identifying and analyzing narrative features such as characterization, plot, setting and theme. In addition, the subject matter, the characters and many of the struggles in the novel are all relatable to my students' everyday lives.
By reading literature that my students can understand and connect with, a love of learning and reading can be cultivated by my self-proclaimed "non-readers" who previously have not had access to books that are best suited to their reading levels.
