I work with a class of 23 fourth graders who are eager to learn. My classroom is not just a place to learn, but a place where my students learn they are able to change the world through the choices and decisions they make in their lives.
The majority of students at my school receive free or reduced-price lunch, meaning they qualify for at least some, if not all, of their meals paid for by the district due to a low parent income at home.
Since many of my students come from low-income homes, it can negatively affect their ability to learn successfully. My students come to school wanting to learn and with a positive attitude to do so, no matter what is going on in their lives. They are hard-workers who want to do good things with their lives, and they know it starts here in the classroom.
My students need a subscription to Scholastic SuperScience magazines to help connect the science standards we are learning in class to the real world. Making those real-life connections can be difficult when you are only 9 years old.
We will use the magazines in both whole group and small group activities to reinforce informational reading skills as we read about how science plays a key role in our daily lives and the lives of those around us.
Sometimes, my students struggle with connecting what we learn to their every day life, and this magazine helps to show the students how science is a huge part of the world around us and has an effect on us each and every day.
