Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
How can I inspire reading and writing with outdated and worn-out books? Some of our classroom library books are over 25 years old and come from tag sales. My students come from low income homes where books are not a priority so our library needs serious updating.
My school is in a low income urban setting.
Few students come to school with supplies and teachers must supplement many classroom materials. Many of my students live at the poverty level. Very few live with both their parents. Many live in crowded apartments or shelters. Books and quiet places to read are not a household priority.
For some students school is the only place they are exposed to rich literature. Most of them love to be read to and teaching writing through high interest picture books will encourage my students to have a love for independent reading and writing.
My Project
A colleague and I have decided to plan our language arts block with the major focus on teaching reading and writing through picture books. We will use Ruth Culham's book, Using Picture Books to Teach Writing with the Traits. We will simultaneously teach reading strategies that good readers need and the 6 traits of writing. Lessons will begin with a read aloud, teacher modeled strategies, and a release of independent reading and writing practices.
Culham's book suggests over 200 picture books that are beautifully written and illustrated. They consist of a diverse collection with current issues our students can make connections to. The materials I am requesting are 35 different picture books that will get us started with the first two traits of six traits writing, inspiring ideas and shaping organization. These books will assist us in already planned lessons in Culham's teacher resource book. These lessons cannot be presented without these picture books.
In order for this project to be successful we need a large collection of picture books from Ruth Clam teacher resource book.
We not only need books for read aloud but also books for independent reading to reinforce reading and writing skills and strategies. There is no greater treasure than brand new picture books that will capture our students attention. I am very excited about our project and know it will only be successful with your support of new picture books.
