Connecting Literacy, Geography and Culture in Baltimore City

My students need 4 globes and 16 non-fiction books, each addressing a different country.

I have the great responsibility--and even greater joy--of teaching Modern World Cultures to 7th graders in one of Maryland's Title I middle schools. I serve both general education and special education populations, and am as determined as ever to see that all of my children--and I do mean all of them--receive the world class education to which they are entitled.

To ground ourselves in our study of modern world cultures, we need a strong grasp of geography. My students are up to the task of mastering the global grid, map keys and scale. Many of my students, especially the children with special needs, are 2-3 years behind grade level in reading. Their IEPs call for access to literature that is on their reading level and portrays rich perspectives. We have a couple of challenging obstacles to these goals: a lack of accessible non-fiction materials to engage the students in reading, and not a single globe in the entire school.

This project calls for books that address diverse world cultures and 4 globes. The globes will enable my students to more comprehensively understand the three-dimensional nature of our Earth and practice using latitude and longitude in a practical way. It is my intention to marry literacy to social studies, meaning that I will instruct students in explicit reading strategies that will enable them to access the social studies content. These high-interest, readable books have compelling photos that will metaphorically transport my students to another country. Students will read the books, locate the country on the globe and analyze how the geographic location affects the culture. The globes and books will address lower-level skills and higher order critical thinking.

This is your opportunity to have a hand in the educations of very deserving children, children you will never meet. Despite the status of our low income community, these children come to school regularly, homework in hand, eager to learn social studies this year. I have worked diligently to invest them in their educations, and after only three short weeks, I can see the results. These globes and books can be yet another way for the students to become invested in their educations and futures. I promise you that the students will be remarkably grateful for the materials and interest that you show in them. I encourage you to take advantage of this opportunity to make a difference in the educations and lives of these promising and charming 7th graders. It is sure to bring you great joy.
