My students enter my art room with BIG smiles and excited hearts as they share in the joy of my 1st year of teaching at their very special school! It's a very exciting time to be a teacher as I aspire to incorporate the Common Core into my Art room!
My students are SO WONDERFUL..coming to the art room ready to learn and share their excitement in learning about the world through the arts.
Now more than ever, we, as art teachers, need to collaborate with the classroom teachers so that we can broaden the understanding of the core subjects in the art room. Students are always so excited to come to art and experiment with their hands. In my class we encourage all of the children to "try your best" and have fun! My school is full of supportive teachers and supportive parents, which makes for a wonderful community to work in. Teaching a child is truly a group effort.
My Project
My students need Clay Glazes, modeling tools, wire cutter, and stone texture. I will be using the clay materials I have requested to teach my 5th graders about the Egyptian culture and the significance of the Canopic Jars in Egyptian Art. They will first learn about the history of the Canopic Jars in a Prezi presentation I have created and then they will learn how to build a Canopic Jar using the pinch pot method in clay. They will be building one of the four characters typically created as a Canopic jar...a human, a jackal, a baboon, or a falcon. Then, for the first time, they will be using colored glazes to decorate their Canopic Jars! Yeah!
Donations to this project means the world to me and my students.
Connecting core subject matter to art is vital in supporting the classroom teachers as they all begin to incorporate the Common Core into their classrooms. Art is not a subject that should be taught in an isolated manner, but one that is supported by using math, science, history and literature to help our students learn and understand information throughout their lives.
