Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am a second year NY City Teaching Fellow at PS 48 in Manhattan which is a Title 1 school. My class is the bilingual (Dual- Language) classroom for the third grade, and all of my students receive free lunch. Many students are newcomers to the country and are still finding their way in their new language and culture. I read them the classic book, "The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe" by CS Lewis in anticipation of the movie release and the children loved the book. As it happens, The Circle in the Square Theater will be performing the play for a K-6 audience in March, 2006 on Broadway. This chance to explore the literature in another dimension will be amazing for my students, in addition to the exposure to the arts at one of New York city's famous theaters this opportunity will provide. This interaction with the literature will be highly beneficial for developing the English language skills of my students as well as the sheer enjoyment of seeing a story they know on the stage.
