As a reading coach for an elementary school in the southeast, I get the opportunity to work with over 800 students from preschool to fifth grade. I work alongside over 40 teachers and interventionists to teach students, organize reading interventions, plan literacy learning opportunities, and foster a love of reading for our children. Our students come to us from many different backgrounds and many of them speak English as a second language. We serve a high need population in our area and work diligently to establish strong ties to families.
Our school is STEAM-based so students from across grade levels have the opportunity to pursue their interests, satisfy their curiosity, and design their learning experiences.
We integrate literacy into all learning experiences so students see the connection between reading, writing, and inquiry.
My Project
Real learning is supported by the combined efforts of families, educators, and community members. The texts selected for this project will provide materials for teachers, administrators, students, parents, and community members to connect through reading. Volunteers will record themselves reading a book from this text set to make available to the 800 students in our school via the school website and social media. Families can access the read aloud videos and listen to different books read aloud and discussed by the stakeholders in our school community.
This project will allow students to listen to their favorite books, preview longer texts to check out and connect with adults in their community.
From this, students will have the chance to create texts modeled after professional authors and share those texts alongside the collection of videos. This project will invite our students to participate in a community of readers and writers.
