Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

We are constantly wondering why kids these days don't enjoy reading, yet the readings selected for our students are rarely engaging texts? Many of my students have never read a chapter book all the way through, and they definitely are not reading the engaging literature I read when I was their age.

One of the greatest injustices in the United States today is educational inequity.

It is unfair to the lower-socioeconomic communities of America that their children will, on average, read two grade levels below their more affluent peers. Students in areas such as these are uncomfortable reading and are, thus, not interested in it. Our schools aren't doing them any favors, the selected readings from many of the mandated reading programs are not engaging for anyone involved, teacher or students.

My Project

I have planned, with a fellow teacher at a neighboring school, to begin a technologically based book club in which we read and discuss the book in class, but also allow the students to talk about the book with another classroom at a neighboring school through online blogs. The Giver by Lois Lowry is a book that everyone from my generation still remembers reading. For many, they site it as the book that got them "hooked to reading". Furthermore, it is a change to expose my students to REAL literature. As a Newbery Winner, The Giver has influenced countless young readers over the years and would expose them to the Utopian/dystopian sub-genre, a hugely influential sub-genre of the 20th century (1984, Brave New World, A Clockwork Orange). The Giver is book that will open my students' eyes to good literature and open their minds to the fruitful discussion that will undoubtedly ensue.

My vision for my students is to foster a love for reading and this is something that can only be done when they see the infinitely expansive world that can be opened up by an incredible book and a group of students ready to discuss it.
