My students are vibrant, passionate, young people who desire to be active members of their community. We are one of the top 5% of the most diverse schools in the nation, with families representing countries all across the globe. Our school is a K-8, with 68% of our students on free and reduced lunch. Yet despite the various challenges our students face, they do not let their circumstances hinder their growth and achievement.
My students are eager to learn and seek out opportunities to speak their voice.
They yearn to be a part of a larger, global conversation. Our students are talented, growth minded, and kind towards the people around them. We want to help them continue to move forward in today’s society, helping share their stories and experiences with their community.
My Project
I am the Tech Teacher Leader at my school and work with the Instructional Leadership Team on campus to promote community and leadership at school. Over the course of the last three years, we have been able to implement technology use across the grade levels. We want to continue on that trajectory and equip our students to be Social Media Interns.
Our goal is have our students be Social Media Interns who will meet with both myself and the principal to learn how to navigate social media properly and safely.
They will then tour the school, giving our community an inside look at what goes on day to day. At the end of the day, we will help our students publish their social media posts under the school’s name, guiding them through the process to ensure an appropriate and relevant post.
Through this process, students will learn how to navigate social media safely and appropriately. We want to equip our students to be responsible digital citizens. Social media is a very powerful tool that can be used for great things. Social movements gain traction, companies vet employees, and global news is instantly communicated all through social media. Students need to know how to navigate these tools in order to thrive in today’s society.
Students across many grade levels will be able to experience the use of these tools given that we are a K-8 school. We are requesting two iPad minis so that we can directly upload the social media applications necessary for our student Social Media Interns. We are looking forward to helping students use social media to share their voice within their community.
