Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As part of a plan to better maximize specific collaborations and use of teacher skill areas, I will be moving to 6th grade next year! Our school, which is customarily one classroom per grade level, will be expanding to open a second sixth grade class.
I am very excited to take on our new students and help them get started on their successful and rigorous year.
This means quite a bit of setup for both classes (which will rotate for literacy interventions) and making sure that students have the resources they need to succeed.
My Project
When I was in middle school, I remember getting small, travel-sized hygiene handouts. I thought it was silly because someone could go through a travel tube of toothpaste in a week or maybe 2 weeks if you stretched it. Sure enough, I ran out early in the school year, so I asked for more from the school nurse.
It took me several years to realize why small hygiene kits matter.
Their primary function isn't to completely supply the hygiene needs of a populace. They're given out to teach students that they can ask for them.
I want my students to know they can always ask me for help, and that sometimes, even if they don't ask, I'll still have them covered. It's middle school, and the social pressures alone are enough to provide a challenge in meeting changing body needs. But my students also come mostly from low-income families, so hygiene is something we take very seriously. It's a task, at times, to keep that a priority when students are under pressure to score better on tests and get into high schools without needing remedial coursework.
Please help me to make sure this important aspect of "starting the school right" doesn't get overlooked! We need hygiene items to start the school year including soaps, deodorant, toothbrushes, and toothpaste.
As a side note, the disinfectant wipes are going to be especially important this year as I will be teaching science experiments and a cooking elective in the same classroom.
