Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The students that attend my school are from a low income neighborhood, city, and region. Most of our parents are hard working and just meet their family's basic needs. We were struck hard by Hurricane Harvey and the torrential rainfall. Almost four months after the devastation, we still have a lot of students living in hotels, apartments, with neighbors, or extended family in crowded situations, and some are living in their flood ravaged homes.
Our students are also 97% minority and over 75% have Spanish as their primary language at home.
My students have worked hard all year in spite of starting the year off 3 weeks late due to devastating flooding that caused damages to homes, neighborhoods, schools, and the entire community. There was not a student, teacher or staff member of our school not affected by Hurricane Harvey. We have persevered and the students have worked hard all year and we would like to reward the students that have earned the highest honor of “Mastered” on the state assessment, STAAR. And to provide these exemplary student with opportunities to access library books and on line learning activities since our public library was totally destroyed by Hurricane Harvey.
My Project
We are wanting to reward the students for their perseverance through this difficult year. In spite of the chaos in our students’ personal lives, they focused hard at school and attained the highest recognition on the 5th grade STAAR Test. These tablets will allow students that work hard to have their own personal technology to further their education. Students will be able to go online and access libraries and online learning activities during the summer and not be slowed down due to our public library being totally destroyed during the flooding of Hurricane Harvey and still not reopened.
