My students need more puppets to give them confidence while speaking Spanish.

I have discovered that puppets allow my students to take more risks while making a speaking activity more fun and engaging. It is as though the puppet is allowed to make mistakes because it is just a puppet.
I have the best students in the world!
I love my kids! Yes we are a high school and yes we play with puppets. I also have toy telephones and they serve as another confidence booster in speaking activities. Our school is considered a high poverty school and some people equate that with students who do not care or do not behave or do not deserve the best resources. That is totally false. Our students are brilliant, lovely, interested and interesting people. They deserve the best we can give them!
Do you like to speak in front of people? Speaking is key in learning a new language. Our main objective is communication after all, not the ability to fill out a verb chart. But getting the kids to get over their hesitancy and engage in speaking activities can be like pulling teeth. Sometimes the students are so afraid of making a mistake or forgetting how to say a word that they freeze up and do not even want to try. However, I have discovered that giving these students a prop such as a puppet or a toy telephone alleviates that fear. It is as though the puppet is the one talking and if a mistake is made it is more acceptable because the puppet is the one "talking." It also helps that using such a silly thing as a puppet in a high school classroom allows the kids to let go of their seemingly all-consuming self-consciousness and enjoy the lesson with the freedom they had as little kids.
Puppets can be very expensive.
I have some cheap ones from Oriental Trading Company that I purchased myself but they are very small and do not fit half the kids' hands. I need larger puppets that will fit adult-sized hands. Right now I only have a few of those and groups have to take turns. If the kids do not have to share puppets with other groups, they can spend more time putting together a dialogue or puppet show and practicing for a presentation and have much more confidence!
