Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach 6th grade mathematics at M.S. 223, The Laboratory School of Finance and Technology. We are a new middle school in what was the worst school in NYC. Before we moved into the building there were serious problems with gang violence and even a shooting outside of the school. Over 95% of our students receive free lunches from the federal government indicating a high level of poverty. Many of our students suffer a lack of confidence and self-esteem. Middle school years are a difficult time for any adolescent but imagine if you had few positive role models and few places to turn for support. Our school does not have a library and we have only a minimum of books. The books we do have do not reflect heroes or characters that are culturally or racially like our children. Our students need to read stories and books about people who face adversity and succeed. I have compiled a list of books that would help strengthen our students' confidence. Please fund this grant and give our students a helping hand in their journey towards a productive adulthood. Thank you for your support.
