Confidence, Creativity, and Connecting in Our Orchestra Classroom
I need to continue my training with the Bornoff Approach to meet the needs of my orchestra students, and this campaign will help ensure that I am able to attend.
Creating. Performing. Responding. Connecting. This is what the orchestra students I see each week spend their time doing. On paper, these students spend thirty minutes a week with me learning the violin, viola, cello, or bass. They are currently learning a method, the Bornoff Approach, that I studied at last year's ASTA Conference, and will eventually continue to play together with other students as their skills develop. At the end of the year, the students in each of the three schools I am in will present a concert to their families and friends.
In real life, these students do so much more than just music.
They learn about themselves, about others, and how to be passionate. They learn to be dedicated, to have empathy, and how to be supportive of others. They learn to push themselves to grow, to persevere, and to think on a higher level. Above all, they experience something that will stay with them forever.
I am incredibly passionate about my discipline and teaching these students. I go above and beyond in each of my classrooms, hoping that the students have the opportunity to connect with each other, the music, and get to create something beautiful.
My Project
The first year students in my orchestra classrooms have seen an increase in higher level thinking skills, and confidence on their instruments. This is because I attended the Bornoff Workshop in Charlottesville, Virginia last year, and brought the method back to the three schools I teach in. We started with it right away, and it was very clear that they all had a better grasp of how to use their bows, how to produce good tone, and how to practice at home.
The students in our district deserve high quality string education from passionate and driven teachers.
Using the Bornoff Approach has given our program a new and truly amazing direction for our beginning orchestra students. I have shared the information I have learned, and will continue to do so, across our district and with other teachers in our county. The training I receive is impacting more than just my own students.
This workshop is an intense 6 days with other colleagues, and Debbie Lyle, who studied with Bornoff. We will go over the method from the very beginning, and how to continue using it throughout the first year and beyond. It is the best workshop I can attend for this information and to continue implementing this amazing method in the district.
