This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I recently made the switch from Middle School Visual Art Teacher to Middle/High School Makerspace Teacher and it has been an immense pleasure getting to know the students at my new school!
My students are full of creativity, ambition and a willingness to work hard!
We are an urban public charter school, serving a large city in Missouri. While the students come from economically diverse backgrounds, many of my students belong to communities that lack resources and need the extra support we aim to provide in our classrooms.
The diversity in our school is something that students take pride in, and as such, our school aims to provide an environment that encourages differences. Being a Visual and Performing Arts school, we also aim to develop and foster a love for the arts through a large range of arts offerings and critical thinking by offering Makerspace STEAM classes to all levels.
My Project
The high school STEAM class is seeking project materials to set up a confessional video/audio booth to tell the stories that many teenagers are anxious to share!
By converting the front room of the GCAA Makerspace into a video/audio studio, students will work with the equipment and the student population to create documentary style films that tell our students' stories.
The iMac will be used to run the DAW (digital audio workstation) software and iMovie for audio and video editing, the lighting package and Nikon DSLR will be set up for videography and the remaining requested equipment will support the sound and video set up.
The student body will be prompted to reflect on the state of everything from their communities and daily struggles to feelings about the current political climate and just sharing their voice.
Our focus will be to learn how to ethically and responsibly tell stories through the digital platform.
