Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school provides a safe haven for students in a high mobility area of our city. Our community is a diverse mix of families, some in their second generation of attendance, veteran and new teachers (including two former students!), and experienced school leaders.
While our students face some obstacles in accessing resources, they have the same aspirations and hopes as students throughout the city.
We strive to overcome some obstacles in providing them with the access and use of technologies that will help them fulfill their goals.
My Project
These Chromebooks will be used to increase our students' success with STEM and prepare them for College and Careers which will depend on knowledge of how to use technology, as well as design applications that will change the future.
Our class will use these Chromebooks specifically to access STEMSCOPES, a program created to support students' understanding of scientific concepts they have engaged with through experimentation.
STEMSCOPES supports vocabulary development, and understanding of Informational text with readings that discuss the concept, as well as virtual labs, that students complete once they have previously conducted real-world experiments themselves.
While STEMSCOPES is provided to us, the technology and resources to access it within our classroom, without interrupting instruction, is currently not available in our school. Due to infrastructure issues, mobile labs aren't easily movable, and our computer dedicated rooms do not have the proper equipment to demonstrate to students how to use technology, nor do they have the classroom anchor charts and notebooks necessary for students to do the work of learning, to be more accountable than pushing some buttons and staring at a screen.
Technology that is easily accessible, easy to move and share, and doesn't require an interruption in instruction to move to another location, is a godsend to a classroom like ours and can improve students outcomes.
