The students at our school are not only from a variety of social, economic, and cultural backgrounds, but they are also budding musicians. Music is a strong part of the culture at our school, and almost 30% of the students are in a performing music class.
We believe that a comprehensive music education is part of the foundation needed to help children aspire to higher learning, a greater sense of self-esteem, better critical thinking skills, and communication.
With a solid foundation in creativity, our students are learning the skills necessary to be successful in life.
My Project
Lolly didn’t come to the concert last night. She missed a wonderful opportunity to perform for her parents, her friends, and most importantly, her herself. The next day I asked Lolly why she absent. My heart sank when I heard her answer: she didn’t perform because she didn’t have the required “black pants and white shirt” and her family was unable to afford them. Had I known, I would have told her to show up anyhow but she was too embarrassed to talk to me beforehand.
In addition to creating beautiful music, we would like to have beautiful concert attire for all of our students, not just those that can afford it.
The addition of this attire will help students concentrate on the music they’re playing and not get anxious about their lack of appropriate clothing. It will give the group a better sense of solidarity and pride, but the biggest reward will be for students like Lolly, who will never have to miss out on activities simply because of not having the necessary resources.
