Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My second graders inspire me daily. We are engaged in remote learning only in Salt Lake City School District in order to keep families, district employees, and the vulnerable of our community safe. Students need interaction, real life experiences, hands on learning in a literacy rich classroom.
The majority of my students are English Learners (ELs).
Kinesthetic learning, learning that incorporates body movement and hands on problem solving, is how ELs are best able to access conceptual knowledge. I have been able to motivate my students to log on to Zoom everyday from 8:00-1:30 by incorporating technology tied to our learning objectives, quick pacing, relationship building, and talk time at recess. They are bonding and it is incredible to see friendships blossom over online learning. My goal is to hand deliver place value blocks to their homes so that they can all participate in creating and writing numbers up to 1000, and ultimately to ensure they are prepared for the learning demands of third grade.
My Project
Second graders are required to learn to count from 1 to 1000. Some of my students are still struggling with the concept of counting from 1 to 100.
My students will use the place value blocks from home during remote learning so that they will master second grade core math concepts.
There is so much we will be able to do together. I will tell them riddles and they will create numbers. They will compose and decompose tens, hundreds, and thousands to gain conceptual understanding of numbers and operations as required by the state core.
