Computing Our Math and Literacy Stations

My Students

I teach at a Title 1 school in Richmond, Virginia. All the students in my school are considered economically disadvantaged and receive free breakfast and lunch. In spite of their challenges, my students view my classroom as a safe place and are always eager and ready to learn. It is always a joy to see the way their faces light up when they get the opportunity to be actively engaged in a lesson.

We live in a society where technology is necessary for communication and learning.

Sadly, our students are lacking in computer skills because of our resources!

Our classroom has two working desktop computers which makes it almost impossible to incorporate technology into station activities. Our students deserve the opportunity to explore and utilize technology so they will become confident and fluent in Reading, Math, and technology skills.

Young learners need daily opportunities to explore and utilize technology to prepare them for 21st Century learning skills. We are asking for 5 Chromebooks with hard shell cases to help students in our station rotations for Reading and Math.

My Project

Students at my school come from low income backgrounds. With these computers, students will be able to engage in multiple websites, such as iReady to build technological literacy and gain more personal practice on individual skills in math and literacy on interactive games. Students will also be able to use this technology to read digital books and listen to reading on the website Epic and engage in short quizzes afterwards so I can keep track of their comprehension. They will be able to publish their writing that they work on each week, learn how to complete research with reliable digital resources, and submit digital assignments instead of constantly using paper. Students will be required to do this after elementary school.

Computer knowledge is a skills required for students and this is an opportunity to allow me to engage both technology and my curriculum simultaneously.
