Computing for the Common Good: A Student-led Help Desk Experience

Help me give my students the opportunity to learn with iPads. Having the ability to work with tablets and learn the Apple operating system would be a huge addition to the program. Thank you!

My Students

I am a high school computer science teacher. I teach everything you want to know about how computers work, their operating systems, applications, and how they connect and send data over the Internet. These skills enable students to pursue any career path. Students also learn life skills through projects and collaborative work that get them thinking, problem solving, and developing customer service skills.

One way my students apply the skills they learn is through a project called Computing for the Common Good (CCG).

CCG is a way for students to apply their skills, in the real world. CCG is a student-led “help desk” that allows students to give back to their community. Students take donated laptops, clean them up, and repair and refurbish them for the purpose of giving them to students who do not have a computer at home. Even today, we still have students who don’t have access to a computer at home. These computers are given a new life with someone in need. Students also support the community by helping various technical problems that the IT department doesn’t support. Students gain satisfaction through helping others, earn volunteer hours, and gain real-world experience.

My Project

Students will learn about Apple iOS and common Apple Apps. They will learn how to troubleshoot and problem solve common issues with the Apple iOS. The tablets will be used for classroom learning and teaching. Our classroom has an abundance of Windows computers. Apple is very popular. Using the tablets to learn the iOS will allow students to apply this knowledge to all Apple products. Students can apply their skill to the Computing for the Common Good project by assisting students with their Apple devices. Knowing how these tablets work will also allow them to learn how to repair and support most Apple devices.
