Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school is in the middle of an urban neighborhood in the third largest city in New Jersey. Most of my students walk to school, they all get free breakfast and lunch, and a many have been together since kindergarten. They are a tight-knit bunch. However, our population has been changing a lot over the past year.
This year our class will have a large number of Spanish speaking students.
We have had a lot of new students that have enrolled since Hurricane Maria. They have left behind friends, possessions and most of all family. Our school works very hard to make these new students welcome and comfortable after a traumatic move, and we want them to be able to focus on learning.
My Project
Our 90-minute math classes are generally large and have an ever-changing roster. Because our classes are so big, my co-teacher and I split the class, with half of the block spent on web-based math programs on the computers. The students can use these programs in the language that they are most comfortable with.
Students will have the opportunity to use the Chromebooks every day to build fluency for the foundations of algebra.
These computers will help ease the communication barrier between the teachers and the students. Certain words, like "linear equation, slope, and y-intercept, mean the same thing in every language. These web-based programs allow for a concrete understanding of these concepts which in turn gives the students the necessary background knowledge and building blocks for high school. We will be using the Chromebooks so often that by the end of each day they are going to be HOT!
