Given it is 2008, in order for our students to be competitive academically and then prepared for the world of work, they must be proficient on the computer. They must be able to navigate the Internet, to type efficiently, and most of all, they must have the confidence to perform the aforementioned. I teach 8th grade at a Middle School in Missouri. We serve a population that is 98% free and reduced lunch. There is only one computer lab for the entire middle school that provides nearly 27 computers that may or may not work efficiently. As a result, students typically do not have access to computers except for the two times a week they have computer class. Like math, spelling or reading, practice makes perfect. We expect our students to read everyday and practice math problems everyday until they reach perfection. However, we do not demand such mastery when it comes to the practical skill of Internet research and basic typing. This, I believe, is a disservice. In order to be successful in school and work, individuals must have computer competence in addition to reading, writing, and math. Therefore, I am hoping to receive one laptop computer to accompany the one other computer in my classroom. Given we will then have only two computers, in addition to mandating computer time for each student each week, I will have the opportunity to make "computer time" an incentive. Students will work harder in order to receive time on the computer. Therefore, not only will this second computer provide my students with more practice, it will also be an incentive to improve behavior and work ethic. Students need access to computers. There is incredible potential for growth and exposure if every student had access to a computer at school. Overall, we will have equal success for all students only when students have equal opportunities to be successful.
