Ms. Johnson from Snellville GA is requesting technology through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need three Chromebooks plus headsets in our classroom in order to optimize learning through the use of technology.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
Technology is everywhere...except in the classrooms at my school! There is one student computer in the room and having three or four students gathered around one computer neither provides an optimum learning environment nor meets the needs of all the students.
My school is a Title I funded school, and 73% of the students qualify for Free and Reduced lunch.
The students are excited about learning and the use of technology gives them an alternative to traditional classroom instruction. Becoming proficient on a computer is a must in today's world, and the opportunity to use computers may not be available in the homes of my students. Having computers, one for each of four children instead of one computer for four children, would allow my students to spread their wings and fly no matter their ability, whether it be Special Education students or Gifted, or the range in between, all of whom I teach.
Chrome Books, a very basic laptop computer, will be used in all areas of the curriculum. In math, one center in my Math Workshop will consist of review using sites found on the Internet. Students work so much better when they can be active participants in their learning rather than passively completing worksheets. Language Arts, on a computer, opens the door to writing, to research, to learning basic skills via the many sites available. Imagine being able to read a chapter book with a computer by your side which gives one the opportunity to look up unknown words and see an image of that word. What a way to enhance comprehension and expand vocabulary. Science and social studies...which would you prefer? Reading a text or using a document, primary source, or picture found on the internet and use it for observation, making inferences from facts therein, predicting, and drawing conclusions. These computers would be in use all day every day!
Technology needs to be a part of the learning process.
It needs to be convenient to use and timely. Waiting to sign up for an empty computer lab is neither. My students love being able to go Online to do Internet-based learning activities and the addition of four Chromebooks to my classroom will be of lasting benefit. to the children.
