My students are incredible. Most of the students at my school come from challenging socio-economic backgrounds, receiving free/reduced-price meals, food bags for the weekends from the school counselor, and gently used clothes from our librarian. Many also come from single parent homes, or their grandparents, aunts, or uncles are raising them. Some live in homes with other families and have very little space to themselves, and very few belongings they can say are theirs.
Despite all of the adversity my students face, they still come to school ready to learn and with hope for their futures.
They are still dreamers, and they aspire to do great things! I am beyond proud of how they take on challenges in their daily lives and work to better themselves each day.
My Project
As students progress through elementary school, the expectations placed on them to be skilled at using computers continues to increase. Areas such as word processing, using Power Point, researching, and even basic programming and coding are all important to my students' ability to keep up with their peers in more economically affluent communities.
If my project is funded, my students will use the computers to practice real world computer skills on a daily basis.
They will practice typing essays, using online programs to complete learning extensions in all subject areas, practice coding through online resources, and create presentations. Having the computers readily available in my classroom will give my students easy access to the tools they need to learn these necessary skills.
