Due to hurricane Rita many schools in our parish lost much of their technology used in class. Two of our schools have been closed; Eaton Park Elementary has grown by 200 students this school year due to this disaster. There has been 13 new teachers added to our faculty to accommodate these new students. Many of these teachers came to our school from these destroyed schools with nothing, this includes any technology. The technology the school has is being stretched to accommodate the new students. The computer I do have is overworked. This computer is being used by myself, two other reading teachers I share a classroom with, our Reading coach, and around 100 students. The students have to line up in order to get any work done. Being a young teacher I use technology daily in my reading and language arts program. Our school has site licenses for many programs like kidspiration, inspiration, graph club, and kid pix. The lack of computers messes up the teacher??s ability to use these resources. The computers would also be used for students to conduct research, write papers, and improve their futures. As a teacher I am required to do all lesson plans, grades, and attendance online. I am also a member of the Accelerated Reader program to enhance students comprehension. The students in my classroom use the computer to take tests, another computer would mean they could take more tests. Eaton Park Elementary consists of 83% poverty. The students have little or no technology in their homes. The computers used in class have an impact on their lives and their futures.
